Introduction
uwIM is a new UW instant messaging system that uses the Java Web Start technology. Java Web Start downloads and executes Java applications. Anyone with a UWNETID can chat using this IM system.
Startup
- You will need JavaSDK
1.4.1_03 or a later version installed. You should have this already
if you have installed the software for the course.
- After reading the startup instructions, go to
http://www.cs.washington.edu/education/courses/481/02au/Groups/GroupA/app/
- Under "Launch for," click on PC or MAC to download.
- Java Web Start will download uwIM and advise you that the program is asking
for unrestricted access, highly recommending that you not allow this. Click "Start" anyway.
The program won't run unless you do.
- Log in with your UWNETID and password.
- Tip: If you cannot reach a dialog box, uwIM will be unresponsive to mouse clicks.
Hit the space bar.
Joining the chat:
- Once you are logged in, click on Chats.
- Click on New Groupchat.
- The Join Chat dialog box pops up:
For Room name, enter cse142, for Nickname, enter a name, <your
uwnetid preferably>.
If your nickname is already taken, nothing happens. You may try to join again
using a different nickname. If successful you will see:
- TAs will be denoted by ta-<uwnetid>, Instructors by instr-<uwnetid>,
and Consultants by consult-<uwnetid>.
- The room may be empty. You can simply wait around or return later.
Usage guidelines:
- Don’t cut & paste blocks of code into the chat area.
- Be courteous and respectful.
Tips:
- You can see the status of some TAs from this page. A check means they are
online, a red crossed circle means they are offline.
- uwIM user's
guide is on the download
IM page
- If uwIM seems to be not responding, hit the space bar.
