Homework assignments may be (re)submitted up to one week after the deadline without penalty. Late (re)submissions beyond this point will not be accepted.

Collaboration and AI Use

The syllabus describes course policies for collaboration, AI use, and the use of other external sources. Starting with Homework 1, every student must complete and submit the reflection.py file for each homework assignment to acknowledge any collaboration, AI use, and external sources.

Failure to acknowledge collaboration, AI use, and/or external sources constitutes academic misconduct. Any homework assignment submissions with missing or incomplete reflection.py files will automatically receive a grade of 0.

Follow the instructions in the reflection.py file and fill out the required fields. In general, you must:

  • Include your name in the corresponding field to indicate the document reflects a full and accurate acknowledgment of any collaboration, AI use, or external sources.
  • Replace the placeholder text (in brackets) for the following fields:
    • @COLLABORATION: Replace the line below with the names of anyone you worked with on the assignment, or NO if you worked alone.
    • @AI-USE: Replace the line below with YES if you used any form of AI while working on the assignment, or NO if you didn’t.
    • @AI-CITATION: If you used any AI tools while working on the assignment, replace the text in square brackets with a short ‘citation’ for the AI tools you used. A ‘citation’ is just the name of the AI model and/or tool (e.g. “Claude Sonnet 5 via UW Purple”).
    • @AI-REFLECTION: If you used AI, replace the text in square brackets with a short (3-4 sentence) response to the following questions:
      • How did you use the AI tool(s) you cited?
      • Did using AI help your understanding and progress on the assignment? Did it pose any limitations for your understanding and progress?
      • What knowledge would you have needed to complete the assignment without AI?
    • @OTHER-SOURCES: If you used any (non-AI) external sources while working on the assignment, replace the text in square brackets with a short acknowledgment (e.g. website links) for these sources.

Every student must fill out reflection.py. If you didn’t collaborate with anyone and didn’t use any AI/external resources for the assignment, just answer NO on the @COLLABORATION and @AI-USE fields and you’re done! No need to fill out the other fields.
