Lab 10 Grades Spreadsheet

B. Designing your Spreadsheet

Right now the spreadsheet is empty. Let's change that by adding a title..

  1. Title. Add a title on the spreadsheet in cell A1.  Your title might be something like "Spot's FIT100 Grades". Once you click on the cell or use the arrows to select cell A1, you can start typing. Once you are done, simply press enter.

  2. Make title bold or increase font size. Now go back to the cell by using either the arrows or the mouse to select it. Notice that the title blends in with the page. We want it to look more prominent. You can make it bold by going back to the cell and pressing CTRL+B or you can increase the font size like you would in a Word document.

  3. Merge cells to make room for title. Notice that the text from "Spot's FIT100 Grades" extends into columns "B" and "C" (see image at far right). You can fix this in one of two ways.

    1. If you think your headings in column "A" will all need the extra width as found in "A1" then you can Mouse Pointersimply move the mouse over to the line that divides "A" and "B". You will see the mouse pointer change into a vertical line with a left and right arrow (see image at immediate right). Hold the left mouse button down the drag column "A" (or whatever column you were adjusting the width of) to the desired width.

    2. If you think this heading likely will be larger than all of our other headings and subheadings, merge cells "A1", "B1", and "C1" together. How many cells you select and merge together depends on how large you make your main title. Click on all of the cells your text is now appearing in and click on the "Merge" button (see below). It may say "Merge and Center" or give you other options. Choose "Merge". You can choose to center it as well. Notice how it is treated as one cell now instead of 3 (or more).
