Lab #4 Altering images with GIMP

Save your image

When you save your image, GIMP may try to create a ".xcf" file which is a GIMP file. This is good for working in GIMP, but your Web browser cannot read ".xcf" files, so we'll save it as a ".jpg" file.

1. Choose "Save" from the "File" menu (your file name might be different than the one you see below, that's fine):

save as dialog box

2. Now change the format to "*.jpg" by clicking on Select File Type (By Extension)::

change to jpg extension

You will see a dialog box telling you that the image must be exported because jpg cannot handle transparency:

export jpg

6. Click on Export.

You will see a dialog box asking how you want to save the file:

save jpg

When you save as a jpg file, the file is compressed to make it smaller. This box allows you to choose how much you want to compress it.

7. Click okay to save your file.

You're finished with your photo! Now you will learn some more about where you can get photos on the web that you can use for free.
