Week 09 Announcements
Announcements for Week 9
Updates (long)
- You should all have received an email with your current grades (based on what we’ve graded so far/you have submitted so far) and projected grades (assuming any missing, or non-competent grades are competent). I spent many hours on making this script more robust so far, but I still have to do some additional edits to account for group submissions, so it won’t quite be automatic as the project proceeds.
- Now that we’ve gotten through Checkpoint 1, please fill out this groupwork form. We’ll fill it out again after Checkpoint 2
- We decided in class on Monday that all required competencies for the final project are required to be group handins. Optional competencies are individual handins. You’ll see this reflected in how gradescope is set up going forward
- Anything that you submit after 11/22 won’t get feedback until the end of the quarter. However, you may still continue submitting things until Monday the 1st. After that, you can only submit required / optional assignments as part of the final project.
- Finally, here’s the remaining scheduled events for the quarter
- Wednesday 11/19: groupwork form due for Checkpoint 1
- Saturday 11/22: HW submitted by this date should receive feedback by 11/26 (assuming we are not inundated)
- Wednesday 11/26: Checkpoint 2
- Friday 11/28: groupwork form due for Checkpoint 2
- Monday 12/1: Final date to submit optional homework and/or resubmits
- Wednesday 12/3: Final project presentations & slide deck due
- Monday 12/8: Final project groupwork form (TBD) and web page due
Week 08 Announcements
Announcements for Week 8
Emails and other weekly things
I believe the emails are out, but I forgot to cc myself and Lucille. Please let us know if you got them in this thread! Thanks
Also, we promised there’d be a thread every week about what’s coming up. Sorry we forgot to do that this week. The main thing is the checkpoint (on Monday). We’ll do that in class. Other than that, it’s just doing the readings, which you can find in the “schedule” section of the course website. As always, let us know here if you have any qusetions!
Midterm Grades Out Soon
Hi folks! Midterm grades should be coming out today, so keep an eye out for an email with information about how you’re doing in the class so far. A couple notes / clarifications about some things:
Everything up through HW3 should be graded. There are a couple lingering optional competencies that we haven’t finished grading yet, but those should be finished later today.
Resubmissions: There are now some new optional assignments on Gradescope that will allow you to resubmit any competency for any of the previous homework assignments. (Please note that you still have to do each competency at least twice before you can resubmit content from an old assignment – if you’ve only done a competency once, you need to find another assignment to do that competency.)
Discussants: When you lead a paper discussion in class, don’t forget to also turn in the materials on Gradescope! There is one competency that is required and several others that are optional.
Participation scores were determined by looking at things like: answering reading questions; leading small group discussions when we share back with the class; turning in finalized laser cutting designs.
We’ll discuss some of this in class too. If you have any questions please feel free to comment on this post or reach out privately!
Reading Questions for Week 8
Hi all! As usual, please read the material for next week posted on the course website and leave a comment answering the questions below by Monday:
[Inclusive studies] If 1 in 5 people are disabled, it is probable that most HCI studies (which often have 20 or more people in them) have multiple disabled people in them. What is gained or lost by not asking about disability, or accommodating it explicitly, in an HCI study? Feel free to use one of your own as an example if you have one.
[Data visualization] Find a complex figure or table in a research paper relevant to your area (can be your own paper if you have one). Evaluate how accessible it is for at least two different kinds of disabilities; try to use it with a screen reader and one other accessibility technology. What would you need to change in order to make it more accessible?
Week 07 Announcements
Plan for Monday
Announcements for Monday
I’m spending today getting on top of things, with the intent of working a more typical week next week. This is long, please read it all the way through.
-
As a reminder: Monday’s class will be structured as follows: A round robin briefly introducing your proposals; followed by meeting time for scoping with rotating support from the course staff.
-
Wednesday’s class will start with Q&A about grading (this is long overdue, but circumstances have made it impossible to do sooner) and we’ll use it to set up for a potential discussion the following week about what, if anything, needs to change in the structure of assessment for the class as part of the higher ed topic on November 19th.
-
The remaining deliverables this quarter are all part of the final project, checkpoints starting on November 17th where you will meet with course staff to share progress reports and get feedback and input.
Last, a heads up about some upcoming changes:
-
Joseph, on 11/12, your work will go right after a guest lecture by a visiting scholar who does robotics + accessibility. You’ll have the second 45 minutes of class to present your paper and for discussion.
-
I’ve added readings for 11/19.
-
I’d like to ask if anyone is interested in switching topics at the end of the term to “what we mean by accessibility”. Specifically, the ASSETS best paper award was on sex work and access in the face of bad actors and I think it’s amazing. If not, we can stay as planned. I’ll add readings for the remaining discussions once this question is resolved.
Week 06 Announcements
Plan for Monday
Class on 10/3
If anyone isn’t part of a group yet and wants to be, for now, try to focus on developing a project proposal idea of your own as the assignment requires.
The structure of class on Monday will be as follows:
Well ask each group or individual to talk about their proposal (informal is fine, doesn’t have to be a formal accessible presentation). Solo individuals will get a chance to share their ideas as well, although not required, however we strongly encourage it in case you don’t find a matching group to join.
After the informal round robin, there will be a chance for folks to talk with other groups about possibly joining forces, synergies, and so on. This will be an informal walk around the room sort of thing for 5 minutes or so.
Then once group formation is complete, groups have a chance to discuss timelines, anything they haven’t finished if their proposal isn’t turned in yet, and so on. During this part of the class, Lucille and I will go around and consult with groups about scope and timelines.
Looking forward to seeing you in person on Monday!

In addition, we will be actively working on simplification for the research topic analysis and summary in class, so take a look at the list of topics and pick a paper (or come with a proposal of your own). Note that these topics partially overlap things we will cover in class, but not completely. If you are assigned a topics a discussant, please pick a different one for your research summary assignment.
