CSE 510 - Course Project Suggestions
Spring 2001
Here are a few suggestions for projects. (We'll add more as they come in.)
- In the UrbanSim project, we are
interested in developing appropriate indicators for communicating
the results of different scenarios to stakeholders. Part of this project
would involve using Value-Sensitive Design techniques to determine the
range of values held by different stakeholders. Talk to Alan for more
information.
- In the
Labscape
project, Larry Arnstein and others are using ubiquitous computing
techniques to help biologists manage laboratory experiments. They have a
short paper for a CHI workshop, and have added some some ideas at the end
for CSE 510 projects: "Breaking Down Barriers in the
Biology Lab," by Larry Arnstein and Stefan Sigurdsson. Talk to Larry
(larrya@cs.washington.edu) for more information.
- Batya Friedman is using Value-Sensitive Design techniques to design
better techniques for handling web browser security issues, in particular
cookies. Investigate interfaces for better communicating the risks and
benefits of particular cookie policies to users.
- Richard Anderson and others are investigating Tutored Video for
teaching 142/3. There are a wide variety of project possibilities; one is
looking for simple technical changes that would encourage more interaction
among students watching the video at a remote site.
