A few questions have arisen more than once in your feedback that I haven't
yet addressed in class. Here they are.
++
Q: When are we going to talk about hardware?
A: We're not going to talk much about hardware in this class; sorry if
this wasn't clear from the beginning. However, we are about to get back
to wire- and signal-level issues when we talk about medium access control.
++
Q: What's the difference between switches, bridges, and routers?
A: There's a nice sidebar in Peterson that addresses this starting on page
254.
++
Q: What's with all the acronyms?
A: I sympathize; they are confusing and hard to learn. Unfortunately,
computer science really loves TLAs (Three-Letter Acronyms), so they are
part of the territory. I think it's important to learn the language of
the field, and so I do try to explain what the acronyms mean in class.
However, your grade won't depend on being able to say what the acronyms
stand for.
If you email me a list of acronyms (you can send anonymous email from the
class web page if you want), I will send email to the class list with
their definitions.
++
Q: Are we going to get homework solutions?
A: Solutions to homework 1 will be passed out with your papers on Friday.
++
Q: I want to learn more about how X works.
A: Chances are good there is more about X in the textbook. Also, RFCs are
frequently quite readable, and go into great detail about how things (are
supposed to) work. I'm also happy to help you find other resources.
++
Always feel free to ask via personal or anonymous email, if you have other
burning questions like these.
Cheers,
Janet
