Instructor: Ryan Maas

OH: Thursday 10:00-11:00 AM (Zoom)

I’m Ryan! I did my undergrad and masters at UW, and am now an assistant teaching professor in the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering. My masters work was in the database group with Magda Balazinska and I’ve also worked in the UW eScience Institute.

Originally I got my undergraduate degree and astronomy and physics, and began working on research related to both databases and astronomy before going to grad school. I’m also interested in data management and data science and teach CSE 344, 444, and 180 on those topics!

In this class, we build a small database management system, called SimpleDB, in Java through a series of labs. This lab series was originally developed by Prof. Sam Madden at MIT. In 444, we are working together with the MIT team on extending and enhancing this lab series.
