Some advice for your first year...

  1. Go to as many events as you can early on. When you first start at UW there will be so many opportunities to go to tech talks, resume workshops, Student Advisory Council discussions, and so much more. Take advantage of these, especially during your first fall quarter. You'll still be excited and haven't had time to make excuses about being tired and having too much work to do because you signed up for too many upper level CS classes.
  2. Talk to people in your classes. You don't have to make a study group, but at least having someone's contact information can help you out when there's a question on the homework you don't understand or you need a second set of eyes for debugging.
  3. Make plans to get off campus and explore Seattle. You have a U-Pass that can take you anywhere in King County, and I have too many friends that took months to visit Pike's Place or Kerry Park. I try to get off campus at least twice a month to take a break from studying and remember that college can be about more than just my classes.
  4. Remember that you can talk to your TAs from Startup even after the quarter starts.
  5. Maybe check out the homepage of StackOverflow for once.
