FIT 100, Winter 2005

Homework 1: Treasure Hunt

Name (Last, First): ________________________
StudentID: __________________
Section: ________

Key Words: course web site, course web site, course web site

Preparation

Some of the questions you may not be able to answer immediately, for two reasons:

1. Some of them depend on things you will do in Lab 0 on Wednesday.

2. Some of the Web areas needed to answer certain questions (e.g., the announcement archive, Message Board, etc.) may not be available until Thursday.

Take a look at the questions now, and if you can't answer them immediately, take another look at them after Wednesday.

Objectives

This assignment is intended to help you become familiar with the course web site and all of the help and resources that are available for the course. This assignment will not be weighted heavily in the final grade, however, it does count and you will be expected to be comfortable with all of the items mentioned for future assignments.

Turn in the homework

You should submit a paper copy of the questions and your answers at the beginning of class on Friday, January 5 7. Be sure to write your name and section number at the top of the page.  Your student ID is not needed.  Without the section number (AA, AB, etc.) your work is likely to be misplaced and you won't get credit for it.

Questions

Info about your UW Network Resources. If you have trouble with this section, review the material in lab 0.
1. What is your email address at the University of Washington?
2. What is the URL (web address) of your UW student home page?
3. When you log on to the MyUW site, you supply your UWNetID and password, and you are then taken to a screen titled "MyUW Main Page". This page has several tabs shown in a row near the top of the page. The first tab is named "MyFrontPage". On the line right below that tab is a short message. What is the message shown on your page?
4. You have an account on the computer system dante. Log on to that account and find out your "disk use status." This information is available using the "Other Choices" : "Disk" menu selections starting from the main log on screen. How much disk space you have been allocated and how much disk space are you currently using?
Info about the course web site.  Important information for this course can be found on the course home page. Check there first if you have a question about the course.
5. What is the URL (web address) for the course web site?
6. On some of the FIT100 web site pages, there are links to the other pages in the site in a column down the left hand side of the page. This is called the site navigation area. One of the links goes to the Announcements Archive. Who wrote the first message that appears in the archive?  (If the Archive link is not active by Friday morning, state that fact instead).
7. In addition to the archive link discussed in problem 6, the navigation area includes a link to the class Bulletin Board. What is the title of the first message posted on the board?  (If the Board is not active by Friday morning, state that instead).
8. What percentage of your FIT100 course grade is the final exam worth?
9. You will be able to view your current scores on-line during the quarter. At least one score field is visible now (if you know how to find it).  Give the name of the first score field listed, and tell what your score value is.
10. Slides are posted on the web in Portable Document Format (or "pdf").  Find the slides posted for the first day of class. Your computer should be able to display that file. What is the slide number of the last slide in that set?  (If the file doesn't open when you click on the link, then you probably need to install Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer.)
11.
Assuming that the schedule doesn't change between now and January 19 (which it might!), what chapter of the textbook should you have read before coming to class that day (so that you could ask questions about the material or be prepared in case there was a quiz that day, etc.)?
12.
What time do Prof. Dickey's office hours end on Thursdays?
