Abalone Tournament

Rules

The general rules are simple: teams will play matches of tree games according to the bracket. The team to first play black will be selected by a random process (like a coin flip). We would like to announce the winners two weeks from the start of the tournament, i.e. on Monday, May 17 in class. To this end, the 16 teams that are already set up to play, should already start setting up a date and time for their first match. Each match should be reported to Krzysztof by email (cc'd to both teams) including the exact result (number of games won by each team).

Setup: The teams will select two identical machines, and each program will have its own machine. The humans will act as the interface between the two programs.

Time for taking a move: The default time for taking a move will be 15 seconds. By mutual agreement, the teams may change this timeout on a move but if agreement cannot be reached, the timeout shall be 15 seconds.

Class credit: Each team will be awarded 2 points of extra credit for every match played and reported to Krzysztof, regardless of whether the team wins or loses (as long as it does not forfeit). Since this is more about playing than about winning, eliminated teams are welcome to arrange matches with other eliminated teams; as long as those matches are reported (with the results), teams will get the credit, up to the total of 10 points.
