Mary Gates Hall Computer Resource Center (CRC)

The IPL (room 334) and the MGH CRC (main floor) are operated by UWired, which sets the hours and overall policies. Normal expected hours are shown here for convenience.  See the UWired computing labs site for detailed information, including holiday, finals week, summer, and intersession hours.
Days Open Close
Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. 11:00 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday 9:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m.

The IPL  has 36 PCs in the main room and 23 PCs in the back.  There are also about 6-8 extra chairs in the back.  The IPL is normally reserved for use by students enrolled in 142/143, and is normally first-come first served.  Occasionally, some or all of the IPL will be scheduled for special use.  Usually, only the back room will be so scheduled, and for short blocks of time (1-2 hours) only.

The CRC contains PCs and some Macintosh computers.  Use of the Macintosh computers for 142/143 is discouraged.  Currently the PCs are running Windows '98. The C language compiler is Microsoft's Visual C++ (MSVC), version 6.0. There is an 8 cent fee for each page that you have printed. Please see the UWired web site for additional information on lab policies.

Consultants

Consultants will be on duty in the lab frequently during the week. They can help answer programming questions that arise while you are working on homework in the lab. Check the 142 consultant schedule or 143 consultant schedule to see when someone will be on duty.  There are also lab assistants on duty to check users in and out, to answer questions about operating the equipment, and to retrieve print-outs.

If you plan to compute at home, you will find it easiest if your system is very similar to the lab set-up. To take the course, you will NOT be required to purchase MSVC.
