GP142: Notes on the 142 Graphics Package

This page will be updated with notes, news, and tips. We will announce updates to it in class messages or the homework notes pages, as appropriate. There are separate sections of this page for notes that are only of interest to Macintosh or Windows users.

Notes for Mac Users Only

Background Animation: For your program to animate while in the background, select "Set Project Type..." from the Project menu, click and hold "SIZE flags", and select "Background NULL events", then click OK.

Metrowerks: We have a version of the GP142 library available for the Metrowerks "CodeWarrior" C compiler, and (except for a small nuisance regarding the menus) it seems to be working fine. We have bundled the library, demo program, Metrowerks project files, etc. into a self-extracting archive.
We are interested in comments on Metrowerks as a possible alternative to or replacement for Think C. We would like to track the development of this product, so if you have comments, positive or negative, please let us know. How to ask for help: First read and reread all of the below information. If that fails try sending mail to the Help Bulletin Board for your compiler (MSVC or Borland). Chances are that someone else has had your problem before. To receive help, your message must include the following information:
1. which step of the instructions you were following when things went wrong
2. which compiler you have (manufacturer and version number)
3. exactly what the error messages are. Preferably, cut and paste the exact message into your email message or print it out.
4. which operating system (NT, Windows 95, Windows 3.x, etc)
MSVC and Borland users: For MSVC and Borland users, we have provided the makefile and project files for you. You should get the appropriate distribution according to the Windows system you run.
Other Users: You should get the distribution file according to the Windows system you run. However, you need to build the project file yourself.

Instructions for Borland and MSVC users
What to do if you have an error:
Reread the above instructions, these notes, the GP142 handout (preferably the updated online version), and the comments in the GP142.H header file. Then double-check everything.
Common Errors:
Here is a summary of some of the common errors people have seen in the past when trying to run GP142 on Windows:
- Compiler error: GP142_rectangleXY, _lineXY, _triangleXY, ... undefined --- sounds like you either didn't include "GP142.h" in your .c file, or didn't put the file itself in the same directory as your .c file.
- Linker error: GP142_rectangleXY, _lineXY, _triangleXY, ... undefined --- If you are using a Borland compiler, make sure you have unselected Case Sensitive Link.
- Other compiler errors involving GP142_FUNC, prototypes for GP142 functions, etc.: hard to be sure, but do double check that your GP142.H starts with #define WINDOWS, not #define MACINTOSH (and capital letters are crucial).
How to ask for help:
If all of the above fails, first try to send mail to the Help Bulletin Board for your compiler (MSVC or Borland). Chances are that someone else has had your problem before. Remember to be as specific as possible about (a) which compiler you have (manufacturer and version number), and (b) exactly what the error messages are. Preferably, cut and paste the exact message into your email message or print it out. (It is very hard to diagnose the disease when the only reported symptom is "The durn thing said something about something not matching something else"!) If the bulletin board is of no help, send us mail or drop by. Remember, few of us use PCs, but we will do what we can.

Duplicate printf's: text printed to the text window on the Windows version is sometimes printed twice. Seems harmless.
