Optimization of Treatment Plans

Due: Wednesday, August 15, 2001

Description

We'll finish the homeworks for CSE 590YA with an evaluation design problem. After several readings and a lot of discussion about the UWMC's radiation therapy control system, we now take a look at the difficulties of automating the treatment planning process and one approach to evaluating such automated solutions.

Please read the following paper: Paluszynski & Kalet - Design Optimization Using Dynamic Evaluation (PS/PDF)

Your assignment is to write a description of your own evaluation procedure for the system, including a description of the hypothesis being tested, the method(s), and the possible conclusions. It should be short (1 page or so).

Guidelines

Your responses are due (on paper) at the beginning of class on August 15. The assignment will be worth 5 points.

Questions & Clarifications

Please write with any questions, and we'll post clarifications here.

Here are some clarifications:

  1. What are we evaluating?
Q: The paper talks about dynamic evaluation ... are we to write about dynamic evaluation or should we come up with a system that can evaluate dynamic evaluation itself?

A: You can come up with an experiment or test that evaluates dynamic evaluation as an improvement in efficiency, or you can come up with some other property of the system to evaluate. The idea is to sketch what kinds of tests you would run to evaluate some aspect of the system. Of course you should state what aspect of the system you are evaluating.
