CSE 590YA - Summer 2001 - Homework #5

An Expert System - The Planning Target Volume Tool
Due: Wednesday, August 8, 2001
Description
We will be discussing the following two papers about the Planning
Target Volume Tool in class next Wednesday:
- Kromhout-Schiro, Austin-Seymour, & Kalet - A Computer Model for
Derivation of the Planning Target Volume from the Gross or Clinical
Tumor Volume: PS
or PDF
- Ketting, et al. - Evaluation of an Expert System Producing
Geometric Solids as Output: PS
or PDF
To prepare yourself for the discussion, write short responses to the
following points:
- A brief description of the purpose, inputs, and outputs of the PTVT.
- We touched briefly on evaluation (the Turing Test). Did the
evaluation methodology appear to be sound? Can you think of
alternatives?
- The evaluation addressed whether the tool output was acceptable to
experts. This is different from determining whether the program is
doing the calculation correctly, i.e., according to the model. How
would you address this latter problem?
- What would seem to be the consequences of errors in the output of
this tool? Could the user of it identify such errors and correct
them?
Guidelines
Your responses are due (on paper) at the beginning of class on August
8. The assignment will be worth 5 points. As with Homework 3, please
bring two copies of your answers to class -- one to hand in at the
beginning and one to use for reference during class discussion.
Questions & Clarifications
