NEWS: As of 4/14 the NetShow server is capable of delivering a stream with HTTP. Those of you who have had trouble receiving NetShow programs through a firewall in the past, should try again.
592 lectures are viewable on the internet both live and on-demand.
The live lectures will be presented in Microsoft NetShow format, as well as in traditional MBONE format. We'll be using VXtreme for on-demand to start the quarter, but may change to Netshow after version 3 is released.

To view the MBONE version, you may use any MBONE tools you may have. A commercial MBONE client for Windows is available free of charge to CS&E students faculty and staff. (contact fred@cs.washington.edu for more information)
To view a Netshow program, install the free Netshow client , and then at class time, you can view the lecture using:
Before you view the VXtreme on-demand version of the lecture, you'll need to download and install a copy of the free VXtreme client.
Links to the on-demand lectures will be posted in the main Lectures page by the Monday following the lecture.
One misleading error commonly reported by the client is Bad or missing channel URL. One way to get this error is to leave your Netshow client configured to use a non-existent proxy. Go to File menu: Properties: Advanced tab, and click "no proxy" then reload.
Both MBONE and Netshow may use multicast delivery (with Netshow multicast is optional). To receive multicast, you must have multicast-enabled routing on your network. If you're not sure whether this is available to you, ask your network administrator. MBONE is exclusively multicast, so you won't be able to use MBONE programs unless you have a multicast-enabled network. Netshow on the other hand will roll-over to unicast if multicast is not available, or if you have disabled it in your client.
Both NetShow and VXtreme can deliver a stream with HTTP. If you have trouble receiving a program, and you are behind a firewall, HTTP is your best choice. To enable this on your VXtreme client, right click on the plug-in, select Configuration, then click the Advanced tab. Select 'use HTTP'. If you have an HTTP proxy, configure that under the proxy tab. See the VXtreme client readme file for more tips. In the Netshow client properties, enable HTTP under the Advanced tab (HTTP enabled is the default for NetShow).
It has been observed that Netshow clients receiving multicast seem to lose track of the stream, and get stuck once in awhile. If this happens to you, try using unicast. To force the client to use unicast, go to the properties for the client, select the Advanced tab, and disable multicast. Quit the Netshow client, and restart it.
