Robin Goodfellow prefers to portray the world as it is, not as it merely appears to be. Goodfellow's harsh portrayal of the building in the background reflects the rigid control exerted on the souls within. The softer shapes of the foregrounded tree speak of its adaptability and welcomingness, which are simultaneously belied and given life by the rich autumnal colors of its foliage. The grass below echoes the deep moistness of the soil that supports it, providing a necessary contrast to the lighted windows in the upper right.
