CSEP 552: Readings

We will have three reading discussions this quarter. For each reading, you will select one paper from a menu of options, read it, and write a response with your reactions.

Schedule

  • Reading 1: due Monday, 10/26
  • Reading 2: due Monday, 11/9
  • Reading 3: due Monday, 12/7

Response

Your response will answer three questions

  1. What is the paper's main argument? Reconstruct the authors' main point in your own words. Be specific. (You may be discussing with students who read a different paper, so you need to be able to explain your paper to them.) About 5 sentences, though quality is more important than quantity.

  2. What is your reaction? Which parts of the paper did you agree/disagree with? Was anything unclear? Connect the paper to your own experience building systems, or to the labs we are building in this course. About 5 sentences.

  3. What do you want to discuss in class? This could be a question you want your classmates' opinions on, or something the paper left unresolved. Or it could be a question about how later systems were influenced by this paper. Make your question concrete with a specific example. Then sketch your own answer to your question. About 5 sentences.

AI use

Your responses should be your own thinking in your own words. Please read the paper yourself and write the response yourself.

You may use AI for light editing, such as grammar, spelling, trimming. If you do, say so on the submission form.

In-class discussion

We will discuss each reading in class the Tuesday after it is due. You will talk about your paper in a small group. Others at your table may have read a different paper, so be ready to explain yours, and be ready to argue about it. Your group will fill out a worksheet to summarize your discussion.
