Once upon a time, MASM was a stand-alone Microsoft complete stand-alone environment for developing MS-DOS programs. The only piece we need for our purposes is the file ml.exe (that's a letter l, not digit 1), which is the actual assembler. This is included with Visual Studio .NET and later versions.
