Energy cost versus speed

• We want our computations to run in finite time

  • We need to drive the computation forward
    • Dissipating energy (kinetic, thermal, etc.)

• Assume we are driving the computation forward at a rate r

  • The computation is r times as likely to go forward as go backward

• The minimum energy per computational step is kTlnr
