Access to Mathematics For the Blind
by
Chandrika Jayant
Reading and writing mathematics has fundamental differences from reading
and writing plain text.
Blind students have to learn to read mathematics in a linear, braille
format. This
presents many problems because of math's non-linearity, its relational
structure, and its
different character set. In this talk, I will discuss the current
standards of math
accessibility for the blind, the current technologies that translate
text, math,
and images into tactile format, and some contributions from UW's Tactile
Graphics Project.
Current research problems will be covered, including automatic math/text
distinction
Discussion will follow the talk.
