The topic this quarter is Meta Data Management. By meta data, I mean structural information about engineered artifacts, such as database schemas, interface definitions, web site maps, and module dependencies. By Meta Data Management, I mean generic database technology that enables the construction of applications that need to build and interpret that structural information and mappings between them.

I’ll give an introductory lecture on the architecture of meta data management systems and applications, and their relationship to the model management project that some of us are pursuing (http://research.microsoft.com/db/ModelMgt/). After that, we’ll read a paper per week that we’ll discuss in class. Topics include data translation, schema integration, comparative evaluation of data models, frame-based models, theory of information-preserving transformations, and logic-based meta data management. I’ll distribute a list of papers on the first day of class.
