CSE590D: Computer-Based Learning Environments (Winter Quarter, 2015)
This quarter, we are
delving deeply into a wicked problem relating to sustainability.
We are also
looking at a diverse set of games that make a serious attempt to model a complex system and/or wicked problem and trying to distill a set of principles/guidelines/etc. These principles would characterize design decisions that aid or hinder a game's ability to educate/raise awareness/model faithfully/help with formulation/etc.
We meet on Tuesdays at 2:30, normally in CSE 624. We welcome new as well as returning participants.
As of January 13, our schedule is as follows:
- Jan. 20. Educational and gaming aspects of SimCity. (Rob).
- Jan. 27. Approaches to modeling the earth in SimEarth and its relatives. (Aaron).
- Feb. 3. The global economics of carbon. (Yun-En).
- Feb. 10. Handling bias in games related to wicked problems. (Eric).
- Feb. 17. Possible tool features for problem formulation (Rob).
- Feb. 24. Computer-aided design of psychological experiments. (Yun-En).
- Mar. 3. Earth Primer, overview and critique. (Aaron).
- Mar. 10. Modelling -- case study of Stella applied to climate change. Discussion about the
relationships among scientific modeling, modeling for public policy discussions, and modeling
