CSE 590B: GRAPHICS & VISION SEMINAR Autumn 2004 Instructors: Aseem Agarwala & Dan Goldman Time: Wednesdays 3:30 - 5:00 Place: EE1 037 (for now) In this seminar, we'll look at a wide range of topics in computer graphics and vision as we review and discuss the best papers from a variety of recent conferences including SIGGRAPH, CVPR, and ECCV. This year, we will draw on Dan Goldman's experience as a visual effects artist for Industrial Light & Magic, and pay special attention to how graphics and vision techniques are used in the film and games industry. Following the example of years past, we will use a "pipelined" approach for the seminar. Each session will be divided into two parts: an hour-long "activity" (introduced the previous week), followed by a half-hour student presentation introducing several new papers and an activity for the following week. The prototypical "activity" is to split up into small groups and discuss the previous week's papers, and then reconvene to present the results of those discussions. However, we encourage more creative activities, especially ones focused on industry practices. These might include demonstrations of available software, screenings of relevant clips from feature films or games, or debates comparing industry and research practices. During our first meeting -- October 6 -- we will begin with an overview of hot topics in graphics and vision. Then, we will find teams of volunteers to present papers on a specific hot topic for each class meeting. Finally, we will load the pipeline with a presentation of several papers on physical simulation for animation, to be discussed the following week. All are welcome; new students in particular are encouraged to attend. Please join the class email list at: https://mailman.cs.washington.edu/mailman/listinfo/cse590b
