Photo assignments

In this class, we will try to become both researchers and practitioners of digital photography.  Each week, you will have a different photo assignment.

Week 1: Freestyle

Submit any photo or set of photos you like.

Week 2: Bathroom photography

Lock yourself in your bathroom and take a set of photos that you think will be interesting.  You should submit a group of photos from this session, and David and Brian will choose the photos to discuss in class.

Week 3: Panning

Try panning the camera to photograph a moving subject. Ideally, the subject should remain sharp, while surrounding objects are blurred. Here's an example, from Freeman Patterson's book, Photography for the Joy of It. Submit your most surprising result!

Week 6: Time lapse sequence

Take a time lapse sequence of something that evolves too slowly to be observed by the naked eye.  You can get inspiration from the pointers given in project #2, or bake up something completely different.  Hmm, baking is a possibility, or maybe decomposing food (ick!).  Well, be creative and have fun with it!

Week 8: Painting with light

Try creating an image in which you "paint with light," as described in Wednesday's lecture. You'll want to use a long exposure, preferably the camera's "bulb" setting, in a darkened room. Then selectively illuminate parts of the scene in order to create an "artistic" kind of image—some sort of image that would be impossible to create with ordinary daylight or flash photography. As always, turn in your most surprising result!

Week 10: Image Stacks

Try creating an image from a sequence of images using the Image Stacks code.  You can use the functionality provided, or, if you feel inspired, write your own module to do something completely new!  This final photo assignment is due in the turnin folder by 2:30pm on Wednesday, June 4.
