Types of Projection

Now that we have a mathematical description of projection, it is fairly easy to extend this and define two general 'flavours' of projection.

Perspective Projection

We project a point Q onto a plane of projection by drawing a line segment from Q to a special point C called the center of projection. The image of Q is the intersection of the line segment with the plane of projection.

Orthographic Projection

In this model of projection, the projection of a point Q is simply the intersection of the plane of projection with a line perpendicular to the plane passing through Q. Another way to think about this is that the center of projection is extended infinitely far below the plane.
