Physics works! The scene consists of three semi-transparent spheres which each cast their colors onto a white canvas. Where their colored areas intersect, you can see the results of the blending: cyan in the intersection of blue and green and orange in the intersection of red and green. Also, the dark areas in the spheres are actually not the result of specular reflection: it is in fact the result of the light being bent away and failing to hit the bright white canvas behind the spheres.
