Summary of stippling results

Gray stippled cylinders are shown without edge lines or specular highlights. The base color is a very light gray. In the first two rows, the stipple values are either a single shade of gray or white. In the first row, the difference between the base luminosity and the stipple luminosity is held constant at 0.5 while the density of the stipple varies. In the second row, the density is held constant at 0.5 while the luminosity difference varies. In the third row, both density and luminosity difference are held constant. For the left cylinder, the stipple values are either 0.5 or 1. For the right cylinder, stipple values are distributed uniformly between 0.5 and 1.
Same as above, but the stipple is blended equally with the image rather than modulating the image luminosity. Edges and large specular highlights are added. Interestingly, these cylinders look almost as though they have been hand-shaded with a colored pencil. Winkenbach and Salesin's work with textures for pen-and-ink drawing could perhaps be combined with tone-based shading to produce artifacts even more similar to colored-pencil sketches.
