Easy Arithmetic: Teaching Children Simple Arithmetic Using a Tablet PC Sofware Program,

by
Anthony Vigil

Mathematical concepts are often very difficult for children to grasp. It seems that when a child has a negative experience, Mathematics can become very daunting. This can lead to them hating Math, feeling as though they "just cannot do math", and becoming disinterested in the subject.

This program, "Easy Arithmetic", was developed for the Tablet PC to help teach simple Arithmetic to children in a way that will not discourage them and will give them a positive opinion about Math. It allows children to learn at their own pace, choosing to see the relation between individual columns of numbers, and the larger arithmetic problem that can be built up from these smaller pieces. In this talk, I will describe how this is implemented as well as how this program can be utilized in a classroom setting.
