Spectral Methods in Data Mining

Though there have been many advances in the field of web search it still
remains difficult to produce good results from queries. Building upon the
collaborative filtering talk presented by Michelle Goodstein last quarter,
we are investigating the use of spectral techniques to produce a better
web search algorithm. Our research focuses on empirically evaluating how
various algorithms work in practice and to prove new theorems regarding
performance guarantees. Joint work with Anna Karlin, Frank McSherry,
Matthew Milcic, Peter Turschmid and Michelle Goodstein.
