Reminding about Tagged
Objects using Passive RFIDs
by
Michael Brinton
People often misplace objects they care about. I present a system that
generates reminders about objects left behind by tagging those objects
with passive RFID tags. Readers positioned in the environment frequented
by users read tags and broadcast the tags. IDs over a short-range
wireless medium. A user's personal server collects the read events in
real-time and processes them to determine if a reminder is warranted or
not. The reminders are delivered to a wristwatch-sized device through a
combination of text messages and audible beeps. The system is
complemented by the integration of Placelab technology for
location-awareness based upon Wifi beacons in the user's environment. In
addition, wisp RFID tags which can detect movement are used to augment
the system logic for determining needed reminders. I will be presenting
both my experience in implementing this technology as well as a
discussion of the greater problems surrounding the issue of effectively
using sensors in a one's environment beyond our specific implementation
of RFID readers.
