What is TalkingMemories?

TalkingMemories is one of the mobile accessibility capstone projects carried out by a small group of students from the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington. It is the first accessible camera application developed for the Android mobile platform, featuring accessible UI with full voice instructions and touch feedback. This application allows blind and low-vision users to take pictures with audio tags and browse/share them with others.

01 Problem: It is said that visually impaired individuals enjoy taking photos on their portable mobile devices. However, it is difficult for the blind to identify images when sharing them with others. Therefore, a more effective way of identifying and sharing photos is desired.
02 Solution: By providing functionalities for the blind users to label photos with audio tags and browse the photos with audio playback, it becomes much easier to differentiate each photo with its unique audio label. An accessible user interface also makes navigating easier.

"It is great especially if you take photos and want to be able to send them to other people and have difficulty identifying which photo is which."
