Group Rationale

A couple of paragraphs giving the reasons why you decided to work together and why you think it will be a fruitful collaboration. Provide a meeting plan for the quarter (i.e., show that your schedules are compatible and you will be able to all meet together for at least 10 hours a week, as needed, especially covering TTh after 2:30). In addition, explain how your work habits are compatible, a list of the other classes in which you may have previously worked together, and a list of both of your skills and why they are appropriate/compatible/complimentary for the kind of project you are interested in.

- How your schedules are compatible?
Andrew:
I have classes from
9:30-11 MWF, and 477 on TuTh; other than that, I'm pretty flexible about when we get together, although I prefer later in the day so I can work.

Saurav:
I have CSE451 (OS) at
11:30-12:30 MWF, and 1:30-2:30 Th.  I am also taking 3 credits of research.  I’m really flexible with meeting times, and also prefer working later in the day.

- How your work habits are compatible?
Andrew:
I like to plan out, set short-ranged goals; I also work well under pressure, and generally my short term goals leave a large chunk of work towards the end. However, I'm flexible to other approaches if the other partner is motivated to work differently, and want to be sure I carry my fair share of the load.

Saurav:
I like to plan out short-term goals as well.  However, I do find myself going on marathon coding runs when a particular project is interesting.  I have noticed that I either work at 100mph or 5mph.  I am seldom found in the middle.

- List both of your skills and why they are appropriate/compatible/complimentary for the kind of project you are interested in.
Andrew:
I am most proficient in the software side of things, and have a strong interest and theoretical understanding of the hardware side, but less experience. We know we will need someone to deal with the operating system and software interfacing side of things, and I am confident I lead us through whatever we need in that department. I know Gaetano was concerned you hadn't taken OS yet; I've completed that course and did very well. For the most part I am interested in using RFID to make processes more efficient with a lower cost. I'm also interested in ways that RFID can simply solve problems that would otherwise be much more challenging.

Saurav:
I am a respectable java programmer and am familiar with C/C++.  Embedded systems is my strongest point, but I have been focusing more on software as of late.  I am pretty good at thinking about problems in the hardware space.  I have experience making circuit boards, with sensor and analog circuits to programming microcontrollers and interfacing them with java programs, (I have also taken networking).  I feel with Andrew’s Linux skills and my hardware knowledge, we will be able to confidently approach problems from several angles.

Project Ideas

List two or three separate ideas for a capstone project, at least one of these (if not more) should be from the list provided on the first day
of class. For any project not on that list, please provide relevant experience that either one or both of you have on the relevant technologies.

Andrew:
I know we're interested in Oogle and Hermes. I had my own ideas relating to ID'ing music, but that sounds less interesting after considering Oogle more carefully. I do still like the idea of using RFID technology in a restaurant environment, but I'm prepared to say we'll do one of the two above. If the other group definitely does Hermes, then Oogle is fine with me, and I think we can do it well.

Saurav:
I have been researching several ideas for quite some time now.  I have contacted both Lauren Saint (Hermes) and Chuck Ely (Oogle) of the industrial design course to develop a concrete understanding of their projects.
We are also considering customizable dining menus.
