Readings:

The following two books are required. The first is the text that details the techniques we'll be studying and using. The second is a famous and entertaining short murder mystery; it will serve us by providing a rich source of examples of situations and objects that we'll use to explore the techniques. These books have both been ordered by the University Bookstore for us, and they are also available from Amazon.com if the U Bookstore runs out.

Tanimoto, The Elements of Artificial Intelligence Using Common Lisp, 2nd Edition(referred to below as "EAICL").
Agatha Christie:And Then There Were None(referred to below as "ATTWN").

The topic indicated for each week corresponds mainly with the assignment for that week. The readings and lectures for that topic tend to start during the previous week, in order to build enough background for you to begin the assignment.

Assignments and Exams:

Assignments weekly, except during the two weeks around the midterm and during the final two weeks, when the mini project is underway. There will be a midterm and a final exam. Each student is a member of a group, (see the group memberships page to find out who is in each group) and the assignments are to be worked out within the groups using HyperNews online forums (linked from a common starting page).
Note: The groups have been adjusted for weeks 2 and 3.
Here are some suggestions related to Assignment 3.
After the midterm exam, there is a brief "period of amnesty" in which you can regain up to half of the points you missed on the test. Note that there are strict requirements on this, and that you cannot get any credit if you turn in your response after Friday, November 20 at 1:25 PM.
Miniprojects: During the final weeks of the course, you have the flexibility to choose a topic yourself from a list of possibilities. You also have the flexibility to work alone or to work in the group of your choice. Here are additional details. The miniprojects are due on or before December 15 at 5:00 PM as described in "additional details." Be sure to include certain items in your report.
Final examination. Here is some information about the exam. In addition to the review that will take place in class on Wednesday, December 9, there will be an extra review session to cover more topics on Thursday, December 10, from 11:00 to 12:00 in our normal meeting room (EE1 room 025).
