Output-based encoding

• Advantages

  • Simple encoding
  • Yields small circuits for most FSMs
  • Good for FPGAs
    • No output logic
  • No glitches on outputs that are state bits

• Disadvantages

  • May need to add bits to disambiguate states
  • Many outputs ? many next-state equations
