Assignment #6: Shot Assignments Phase 2 Continued
Assigned: Thursday, Feb 9nd, 2012
Due: Thursday, Feb 16th at 4:30pm
Resources:
- Richard Williams Animator's Survival Kit
Part 1: Facial Expressions
In addition to your shots, this week you will be using the Melvin rig to pose the six cardinal expressions:
joy, sadness, anger, disgust, surprise, and fear.
Keep in mind that even the slightest details can change how the face is
read. Use the mirrors in the lab and yourself as reference. Also remember that the position of the head can change how an expression is read, so feel free
to rotate the neck control. However, don't go too crazy on the body, as the focus is the face.
What to do:
Do a still pose of the face for each of the six expressions. These expressions should be in
the same file using stepped keyframes (place each expression ten frames apart:
0, 10, 20, etc). Take a screenshot or render of both a front and side view of each
expression.
Part 2: Production Shot Breakdowns and Polish
In this assignment you will add breakdowns and some will also polish your assigned shots.
You have two shots to animate to almost if not full completion for this phase. Follow these three steps:
-
Use the reference that was taken, and always feel free to
take your own reference. Draw out planning sheets to help you find the strongest poses and
motion.
-
Add breakdowns. Have a good amount ready for your motion check-in on
Monday/Tuesday so you can recieve feedback on them before moving
forward. Do not move forward before getting this feedback.
If you move forward prematurely it may result in more potentially wasted
work, since timing/spacing issues may be overlooked and be hard to identify.
-
Add more breakdowns/polish. There should be enough inbetweens such that the
we can get a sense of the motion arcs, timing, and overlapping action. Polished work
should be fluid and smooth (ie no popping knees, floaty interpolation, jerky movement).
