That's a great article---I knew cryptography had humanitarian
applications in theory, but I didn't know it actually was being used.
If anyone would like to play with public key cryptography, the attus
have GPG installed. (GPG: "GNU Privacy Guard", an acronym intentionally
similar to PGP. It's functionally equivalent to PGP, but it's also Free.)
That project also provides a free manual on how to get started and a bit
of the conceptual background (see chapter 2):

I'll cryptographically sign this message, too: in theory, the
attachment, which is just a bunch of letters, proves that only I (or
someone in possession of my private key and passphrase) could have
written this.
