Good question.
In the Internet, this is rarely a concern, as hostnames are assigned by
administrators and chosen to be unique within each domain. (We'll talk
about DNS, the Internet's domain name system, towards the end of the
quarter.)
In an ad hoc network like Fishnet, name conflicts are pretty much
inevitable.
Here's what I would suggest. If you learn of another node that has the
same name as yours, print a warning so that the user can change the node
name to something else. If you learn of two other nodes with the same
name, it's OK to just pick one, although it might be nice to be able to
warn the user if they try to send a ping to a duplicated name.
Cheers,
Janet
