First of all, the original image is a cropped version of an image called "Evolution" on Deviant Art. I cropped it years ago to use it as a wallpaper with fitting dimensions. Its source can be found here: http://alyn.deviantart.com/art/Evolution-36462345. The upper portion of the image is quite smooth in color, so it was quite easy to paint with just regular lines. The landscape itself is quite complex so I tried what I could with line brushing at various angles and smoothing images afterward. For trees I used scattered circles. The most difficult part is the shading in the bottom portion of the image, the sudden changes in intensity make color sampling quite chaotic.
