Well, this took a bit of time to render, but it was worth it! This is mostly an experiment in transmission and reflection: light is transmitted through four spheres, each with slightly different properties. Four more spheres, placed around the viewing axis, serve as reflectors, leading to the more fractal-like behavior of the image. A point light behind the spheres and a directional light aiming along the camera's view are all that was used to generate this image. The rendering also takes advantage of Beer's Law to diminish the intensity of transmitted rays based on the distance they travel through an object. This causes some fascinating highlighting to occur in the central spheres.
