CSE 456 - Story for Digital Animation

    Final Notes & Checklist
Your final work will be due in via email by midnight on Wednesday July 20.You will get valuable feedback on Tuesday but make sure that your work is 95% finished by Tuesday. You will need to use the limited time left to complete the project and "polish".

Your TA's will have time to spend with you to review your Pitches (and time you!) and review your work in progress for both the Cinematic Sandbox and the Premiere Storyreels. I strongly urge you to take advantage of their help. They have the expertise to help you visualize your story and help with the length and quality of your pitches! You'll need to get these pitches down to 1:30 for Tuesday so you'll need to practice. Also, get used to pitching without looking at your thumbnails. And, again, if you can videotape yourself pitching you can gather valuable information about the way your pitch.

Time Management:

Please remember to manage your time and get started early. These projects cannot be completed the night before they are due. It's physically impossible. Also, while you can approach the project anyway you like, my suggestion is not to start at the beginning of the project and work to the end. Instead make sure that all of the seven beats are addressed in a rough cut first and then add in as much as you can to fill in the story. So you can fill out your story as you go and not peave out large portions of the story if you run out of time. This way you will be sure to get through all of the steps by the time the project is due. Remember, a large part of your challenge is to figure out what to cut out. Remember to visualize the mother's "realization" ( show it) and also the Mother's decision to change. Also remember to get the contrast between the beginning of the story where the mother looks almost" perfect and later on when she looks worn out and distraught. She needs to go very low emotionally in order to have an impact on your audience. They need to have empathy for your character in order to relate and care about her journey and her eventual decision to change.

Check List

Below is the check list for the final notebook you will be turning in at the beginning of class on Tuesday. Be sure to bring in the cinematic sandbox and/or the proper premiere files (avi's) and show up early enough to get them onto the computer up in the front of the room so that we can run through all of the work without interruption. It will be first come first served. If you are late to class, you run the risk of not having your work reviewed so please be early if possible, I'll be in the classroom at 10:30 ready to load files.

Last but not least -- I will be spending 10-15 minutes on the rest of the animation production pipeline on Tuesday. It would be useful for you all to know what happens after pre-production. The character animation demo was presented during your lab on Thursday as part of your understanding of the production pipeline down the line but I will fill in the rest. After class I would like to make appointments later in the week to meet up with those of you who are interested in the animation capstone next year. Please let me know if you want to make an appointment with me asap. Thanks!

Good luck in your last weekend of the course. You will find that the story and your visualization of the story will get more interesting as you ramp up the production quality. Please remember to get the best music possible in there to fit your story beats and supplement your visuals. You will need to make sure that the audio you want is loaded into the file you save out. Robert can help you out with this Monday if you need last minute help but it would be wise to get your music in your file early on so you can synchronize the audio with the visual elements of your story. Check in with your TA's if need be. Good luck!!
