Average Face Eigen Faces (Ascending)
Mismatch 1 Mismatch 2

Questions

  1. Beyond 5 or 6 eigenfaces, the percentage of correct matches reaches a plateau. In fact, using only 6 eigenfaces results in one more correct match than using 20 eigenfaces! As a result, there is no clear answer as to how many eigenfaces to use.
  2. Mismatch 1 is a very reasonable mismatch considering that the person in the left image has his eyes closed in his nonsmiling picture. Mismatch 2, however, seems like it is not the best match since he is wearing glasses and the image to which it was matched is not. In both of the mismatches, the correct match is the second best result.

Cropping and Finding Faces

Questions

  1. The min, max, and scale for each image respectively are .60, 1.0, .05 and .30 .60 .02
  2. Both images contained some false positives. I experimented using no preprocessing as well multiplying by the distance from the mean face and dividing by the variance of the image. Both cases were unable to detect all of the faces. In order to properly detect the faces, I would have to implement something more advanced, such as Bayesian skin detection.
