This was the standard solution, and it seemed to work pretty well. What could probably be improved was the blending function. As you can see, where the images are blended together, there is some blurriness, which could be improved with a better blending function.

This worked pretty well. The only problem seemed to be that the tripod wasn't totally level, so there was some black pixels at the top of the image. Also, the clicks of the Kaidan head didn't seem to be exactly the same, because there were some images that I had to adjust the offset when figuring out the distance between pairs of images. But after that adjustment, it looks pretty good, and the ends match up well. One thing that could be improved is accounting for changes in exposure (since one of the images was considerably darker than the others).

Pretty good results for handheld. However, there was some slight ghosting (mostly vertical shift) because of the shakiness of the hand. Also, there were bigger black regions because one of the images was significantly more vertically shifted than the others. There were also some exposure problems.
