Holly Smokes - Jack Wright Menzel, 2005
I figured I should make something patriotic, since that is so hip and I hear that America is all the rave around the world these days. So I went searching on image.google.com for pictures of Uncle Sam, because he is such an good example of freedom and liberty and justice and Democracy and Mom's apple pie. The perfect embasitor of American values.
I found that most of the images of Uncle Sam are of the official recruiting poster or snapshots of county fairs and parades featuring peculiarly patriotic clowns. Finally I stumbled across the image below which featured Uncle Sam's profile in a All American call to do the very un-American act of carpooling. (Which interestingly enough actually is a WWII poster.)
An image of Uncle Sam is really not complete without proper scale. So next I went in search a background. Pictures of space from NASA seemed to do the trick nicely.
Then it occurred to me that Uncle Sam rules the world and so it would be appropriate for him to appear more happy about his position in the world and perhaps would enjoy smoking a freedom cigar. images.google.com again didn't disappoint.
But the image was still missing something. Smoke. How could Uncle Sam be smoking a freedom cigar without a awesome plume of smoke.
Finally, the finishing touches, including the blurring of the edges, enlarging his left eye, the ominous red glow, and liberty haze, were added in Photoshop.
