CSE490CV – Project2 : Panoramic Mosaic Stitching

Result

I made following panoramas for Project2.

* Test sequence : Hub lawn (UW)

* Kaidan head sequence 1 : Drumheller Fountain (UW)

* Kaidan head sequence 2 : Drumheller Fountain (UW) at night

      * Hand-held sequence : near my house

Everything works fine : cylindrical warpings, image alignments (Lukas-Kanade + correlation), and blending images.

Stitched images by Kaidan head sequence are aligned very well. However, stitched image by hand-held sequence has some problems.

Some variations

Exposure difference : exposure differences between consecutive images cause fluctuations of colors, and make it difficult to align images. I tried to correct exposure differences. Detailed description is here.

Blend images : I tried 3 functions for blending – linear (hat) function, Gaussian type function, and Hanning window. Among them, Hanning window works better than others for me.

Discussion

Hand-held sequence : Quality of stitched image by hand-held sequence is not good. I think some numbers for warping is not exactly matched. Kaidan head images are taken for 480x640, but hand-held images are taken for 640x480. Object far from camera is well focused and well aligned, but object near the camera is not aligned well. Addition to this, some rotational factors make it difficult to align images. This can be further studied.
