ICQ protocol

• Several types of communication:

  • Instant messages transferred through server
  • For chat sessions, one client connects directly to the other client(s)

• Client logs in to server, sending:

  • Password for authentication
  • IP address and port that it listens on
  • Contact list (to be notified of their presence)
