Veterist connects veterans with PTSD to the best resources for their needs

THE PROBLEM

About four million (60% of) veterans diagnosed with PTSD are not reaching out for help with their diagnoses. PTSD is a serious mental health issue, and puts veterans at severe risk. This is clear when we look at the numbers. In the United States in 2017, 40,000 veterans were homeless. Furthermore, in 2016, an average of 20 veterans committed suicide per day. While PTSD does not necessarily account for all of these numbers, it puts veterans in a vulnerable state that increases their risk to become one of these statistics. There are a few factors contributing to this staggering problem, such as poor access to resources, stigma surrounding mental health, and a lack of community or support between veterans once retired from service. Veterist seeks to find solutions to these problems.

OUR SOLUTION

Our solution is a mobile application designed to provide direct support to veterans with PTSD on an as-needed basis. This addresses some of the aspects of the problem described above in the following ways. First, we hope to increase veterans’ access to both long term and immediate resources by connecting them with organizations based on their personal needs. Second, we want to challenge the stigma surrounding mental health by connecting veterans with others experiencing the same hardship. Through these connections, we hope to foster community and support between veterans with each other and mental health professionals. Below, you will see the features of Veterist designed to execute this solution.
