Problem Overview

America is currently home to over eight million unemployed adults, 27.6%2 of which are considered “long-term unemployed”. People who are part of this category struggle to find jobs for different reasons such as lack of education or a deficiency in marketable skills. The focus of our design is to provide members of a community with a mobile app that is centered on both interpersonal and personal development in the trade world. If a user wants to search for trade opportunities, they are walked through a questionnaire that narrows down their search to a field that would best match their personality, interests, and more. At the end, they are shown nearby mentors to begin chatting with them, and hopefully, begin an apprenticeship with one of them. If a user wants to focus on personal growth in their area of trade, they can view the number of “experience points” they have earned from learning/practicing certain skills, and recommended skills to tackle next. They can gain points by doing in-app exercises that help reinforce basic concepts of certain skills.

Design Process

  • Defining the Problem

The first step in the user centered design process is to define the problem. Our team worked together to list the most pervasive problems in our own communities.

  • User Reasearch

We conducted user research to better understand the needs of our potentail users. This included interviewing 3 members of our user group to understand their context.

  • Ideation

Our team sketched our ideas on paper, and then worked together to iterate on our best designs. We created initial prototype sketches as well as storyboards to convey our ideas to different stakeholders.

  • July 2014

    Prototyping

We moved our best ideas to paper in the form of a paper prototype. This allowed us to conduct hueristic evaluations and user testing to refine our design.
