HCI Project Fair - Student Presentations

Each fall, students in UW CSE's introductory Human-Computer Interaction course (CSE 440) organize into teams and spend a quarter iteratively designing, prototyping, and evaluating a user interface.

Come join us on Thursday, December 6th, from 10:30 AM - 1:30 PM to see what the seven student teams created this quarter (feel free to come at 11:30 for a brief overview of the course, the three final talks, and the poster session). Lunch is on us. It is a great chance to meet top graduating students in computer science, design, informatics, architecture, & digital arts who have an interest in user interfaces. This select group of students includes the designers, programmers, and evaluation specialists of the future.

The students had an especially challenging design charge this quarter. They were asked to develop technology that either took advantage of location-enhanced technology or involved ubiquitous computing in our personal lives. The resulting projects have interesting mobile, visual, or physical user interfaces.

The HCI Project Fair will take place on the UW campus, Johnson Hall room 175 (just off of Drumheller Fountain). Details on the project fair activities, this quarter's projects, and how to get there follow.

Activities:

The first four teams will give 15 minute presentations showing you the design and evolution of their interfaces starting at 10:30 AM. At 11:30 AM, I will give a 15 minute overview of what was taught in the HCI course this quarter and how the student projects were structured. Then, the three remaining student teams will each give their presentations.

Following the formal presentation we will have food, drinks, and a demo/poster session to give you a chance to meet the students and see their projects up close.

This is your opportunity to find out more about the current state of the art of human-computer interaction education, to learn its role in a university curriculum, and to see some novel ideas presented by some of the top graduating seniors in the country.

Projects:

The seven innovative group projects look at applications and services on mobile (often phone-based) platforms.

New City Event Finder

New City Event Finder is a tool accessed through mobile phone that suggests and searches for events in a new city according to desired category, location and time.

TripMe

TripMe is a mobile software solution for determining and planning the most convenient, cost effective and environmentally friendly method of travel.

What's Happening?

What's Happening? is a mobile application that allows people to find, be alerted by, or post events that are occuring around them.

BuddyMap

BuddyMap is a personal locator device that helps members of a group stay together and keep tabs on each other when skiing, hiking, or touring a city.

QuitIt

QuitIt is an ever-present companion providing support to people who are struggling to make dietary changes and fend off cravings.

Crime Warning

Crime Warning is a system that allows people to make informed decisions about criminal activities or unsafe situations through official and user reported information.

Student Task Planner

Student Task Planner enables students to view, collect, organize, and share their tasks in a convenient way on their mobile phones.
