Getting Help¶
If you have a general question that other students could potentially benefit from, considering posting on Ed. On Ed, you can also set your questions to private or anonymous as you see appropriate.
For logistical questions (such as extenuating circumstances and DRS accomodations), we ask that you post privately on Ed so the whole staff can respond. For sensitive situations, you can also email Porter directly if you would feel more comfortable.
We are often available at other times by appointment, and we encourage you to schedule 1:1 appointments whenever you want to talk about concepts, grades, internships, or anything else.
You can find Zoom links for CSE 391 office hours using our general Zoom instructions.
Instructor¶
Porter Jones he/him
Hey, I’m Porter! I was born in Seattle and have lived here my whole life. I graduated from UW CSE in 2021 as part of the BS/MS program. I spent a lot of time teaching while at UW, and it’s great to be back this quarter as a part-time instructor.
I currently work for a small startup called Mechanical Orchard. We work on mainframe modernization while using “extreme programming” practices (fortunately, overworking employees is not one of these practices). I’ve worked as both a full-stack software engineer and an embedded software engineer since graduating.
Outside of work, I love a variety of activities, almost all made better when I do them with friends. Examples include gardening, cooking, skiing, hiking, biking, basketball, listening to and playing music, and being a couch potato.
I look forward to the quarter and meeting you all! Feel free to come chat about anything, course related or not.
Teaching Assistants¶
Ellie Strandquist she/her
Hi everyone, I’m a 5th year PhD student working to incorporate patients as partners in neural engineering research trials. My roots are creative, including a prior career as a pastry chef, so I am motivated by creative and human-centered solutions to humanitarian problems. Besides connecting with people within and outside of work, I love traveling, hot yoga, and Argentine tango.
Ziao Yin he/him
Hey everyone! I’m Ziao and I am currently a junior majoring in cs and biochem. When I’m not busy, I enjoy spending time outdoors, traveling, and skiing during the winter season. Looking forward to meeting everyone and we’ll get through this quarter together!
